Travel Primer

Passports, your phone, and trains: everything in one place for the trip. The same three guides are also on their own pages, at guides.bpowell.ca.

3. TrainsYour pass, booked seats, and what is not covered

1Which passport, when

You are British and Canadian, so you travel with two passports. Carry both, every day. Show the one named here.

Why it works this way

If a desk asks for the other passport, show it. Rules can change; this was checked on Oct 7 2026.

2Your phone in Europe: Roamless

Roamless is one eSIM for the whole trip. It works in every country you visit, so there is no new SIM at each border. You have $40 of credit loaded, pay as you go: data draws down the credit, and you can top up in the Roamless app. Leftover credit does not expire.

When you land in London

  1. Open Settings, tap Cellular, then Cellular Data.
  2. Tick Roamless instead of Canada.
  3. On the same screen, turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off.
  4. Go back to Cellular. Under SIMs, tap Roamless and turn Data Roaming on.
  5. Under SIMs, tap Canada and turn Data Roaming off. That stops your Canadian carrier charging for data abroad.
That's it for the whole trip. Nothing to change at the borders.
Calls: use WhatsApp, FaceTime or iMessage. They run on Roamless data. A normal call on your Canada number can cost extra.

Flying home

  1. Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data: tick Canada.
  2. Optional: under SIMs, tap Roamless and turn the line off.

Check your credit any time in the Roamless app.

3Trains: which code do I show?

Your Interrail pass is in the Rail Planner app. Every train goes on the pass first. Some trains also need a booked seat.

Every train, every time

  1. Before boarding: Rail Planner, My Trip. Find the train and switch it on, so it is added to your pass.
  2. On board: My Pass, then Show ticket. That QR code is what the conductor scans.
  3. Once a day: open Rail Planner with signal or wifi. After 24 hours offline the pass stops working until it reconnects.

Pass QR only: no booking, no extra cost
